Surgical Oncology

Surgical Oncology, specifically, is a field surgery which focuses on the removal of cancerous tissue from the body. Depending on the case, this type of surgery is performed by a general surgeon or a surgical oncologist, which is a medical doctor who specializes in treating cancer using surgery.  Surgery can be used to diagnose, determine the stage of, treat, or manage certain cancer-related symptoms. Surgery is the oldest form of cancer therapy and is effective for many types of cancer. Quite often, surgery will be combined with other forms of cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, or hormone therapy.
