What is General Surgery?

General surgery is a medical specialty that requires an extensive scope of familiarity and knowledge of the many diseases that may necessitate surgical treatment. The magnitude of this knowledge varies, of course, depending on the disease, but the discipline, in general, requires a primary core of knowledge concerning metabolism, nutrition, anatomy, physiology, immunology, pathology, shock and resuscitation, wound healing, intensive care, and neoplasia (abnormal cell growth), which are prevalent to all surgical specialties. There are nine core components of surgery, which a medical doctor who specializes as a general surgeon has comprehensive knowledge and experience in:
